How office affects the voter
Omaha is governed by a Strong Mayor form of government which means the mayor is essentially the President/CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of the city. The mayor’s decisions affect all aspects of city government in concert with the City Council. A Strong executive enables the business of city services to operate, be managed and to be held accountable directly on the election ballot.
Duties and Responsibilities
Each year the mayor is to present a proposed budget to the City Council. The mayor may from time to time recommend measures the City Council should consider. As CEO the mayor has authority for hiring and firing of city department heads as well as being responsible for enforcing the law. The mayor therefore has significant involvement in police activity.
Requirements for the position
The requirements for the position state that the candidate must be 25 or older, a registered voter in the city and must not hold a high elective office.

Larger cities like Omaha have the Strong Mayor-council form of government with an executive branch (mayor and city offices) and a legislative branch (city council). Smaller cities typically hire a city manager.
