Duties and Responsibilities

• Form policies, planning, and evaluation for the state school system• Organize the State Department of Education• Appoint a Commissioner who will also be the executive officer of the State Board.• Provide supervision and consultation to schools• Regulate school transportation• Administer federally established education programs

Requirements for the position

Must be a registered voter. Must not be actively engaged in the teaching profession. Must not be a holder of any state office or a member of a state board or commission unless the board or commission is limited to an advisory capacity.Must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Nebraska for at least six (6) months. Must be a resident of the district from which they are elected for at least six (6) months immediately preceding their election.

Office holders suggest board members must have a focus on all students to receive the resources and opportunities they need to be successful in career or college. Must also be willing to dedicate the time for research before making Board decisions.
