Job Description
How office affects the voter
The County Sheriffis responsible for law enforcement in the County, but not including inside city limits where the city has a police force. City police and County sheriff deputies work side by side to protect and serve the public.
Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibility of the Sheriff is to provide leadership for what it takes to maintain law and order, oversees the county jail, and ensures public safety. Of course, the responsibility is much larger depending on the population of the County. For example, Douglas County has several categories of workers: Uniformed Services Bureau, Several Divisions: Auxiliary, Court Services, Criminal Investigation, Special Investigation, Special Operations, Training. Other responsibilities includes details like fingerprinting, handgun permits, traffic management as needed, maintaining the sex offender registry. Other Counties typically have smaller divisions but still manage the same issues on a smaller scale.

Requirements for the position
1) Registered voter residing in the county, though not needed when filing, 2) Possess a law enforcement officer certificate or diploma issued by the Nebraska Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. 3) A standardized letter issued by the director of the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center certifying that the candidate was duly issued such certificate or diploma shall be filed with the candidate filing form.
Other information
Even with varying population and physical sizes of the counties, the qualities needed for the responsibility include diligence, patience, persistence, critical thinking, problem-solving, physical fitness, communication skills, legal knowledge, personal integrity.
Term of office
Term of office is 4 years, with no term limits.
Partisan?
Candidates are nominated by their party in a primary election.
When election is held
Every four years along with state officers.
