How office affects the voter

The appraisal of property values determines what property taxes are based on. For the home or business owner, it is obvious, but renters also are affected by property tax appraisals. See State Information

Duties and Responsibilities

The elected Assessor hires individuals who do the actual determinations. They are assigned specific neighborhoods and communities, giving their reports by January 1st each year based in part on market adjustments from real estate values. Appraisers also do measuring, photographing and keeping information on property improvements or downgrades updated. When all the information is gathered, the Assessor and team work to see property is valued uniformly and proportionately throughout the county.

Requirements for the position

Registered voter. Residency in the county is not required when applying to run but is required if the position is won. Passing a test is required to acquire A County Assessor Certificate.

Other information

Needs to be able to work together with the county board and have office management skills.

Term of office

Term of office is 4 years, with no term limits.

Partisan?

Candidates are nominated by their party in a primary election.

When election is held

Every four years along with state officers.

See State Statutes 23-3201 through 23-3206, County Assessor is to be a full-time job in counties with more than 3500 population, in counties bigger than 200,000 they are to hire deputies. In small counties the County Clerk can act as an ex officio County Assessor.
