The Douglas County Commissioners, also known as the County Board approve the budgets of every county office, including those of the elected officials. That means they have significant say in how tax dollars are spent. They decide who will be awarded a contract for county services
---Policymaking and legislative authority, passing resolutions, ---Chairing and appointing committees, ---Hire and fire the county administrator, ---Responsible for the judicial system (courts, jail, Sheriff deputies), ---Responsible for Health and General Assistance, including the Douglas County Hospital, ---Managing taxation for all jurisdictions, valuations and Geographic Information Systems, ---Purchase, lease, or lease with option to buy and/or sell needed real estate - with limitations. The cities within the County operate within specific geographic boundaries and are responsible to provide for their citizens including police, fire and emergency services, parks and recreation, and infrastructure like streets and sewers. The city has broad authority within a limited geographic boundary. Though the County oversees any County area outside those limited city boundaries, the duties of the county vary greatly from the duties of the city.
