The Register of Deeds keeps track of who owns which properties, so voters who own property, or are in process of purchasing property, are trusting the Register of Deeds to keep accurate records.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Register of Deeds is responsible for maintaining accurate and current land records. Numerous documents relating to real estate including deeds, mortgages, easements, contracts, assignments, releases and plats are recorded in the office. Financial records for properties that are not yet paid for are managed by the Register of Deeds. They keep track of bankruptcy proceedings and their effects on property ownership. Statutes detail how records are to be kept, including the need to have fireproof vaults.

Candidates are nominated by their party in a primary election.

When election is held

Every four years along with state officers.
