How office affects the voter

The Nebraska Department of Justice/Office of the Attorney General operates, in many respects, as the "State's law firm." The office is headed by the Nebraska Attorney General, an independently-elected constitutional officer, and is a diverse organization of highly specialized attorneys and support staff. The Attorney General's Office is the largest "law firm" in Nebraska outside of Omaha.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Criminal Bureau – investigate, prosecute, handle appeals, advocate for crime victims included in federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies needs. They provide support for county attorneys. Recent years have included the Nebraska Human Trafficking Task Force. 2. Solicitor General – the chief litigator for all civil appeals, and drafts friend of the court briefs on behalf of the State of Nebraska to federal courts. 3. Civil Litigation Bureau – handles civil lawsuits filed against the State. 4. Legal Services - researches and drafts the bulk of Attorney General Opinions. 5. Health Licensure Bureau - reviews complaints against licensed health care professionals, advises concerning professional health boards on disciplinary matters, licensure applications, and interpretation of statutes and regulations governing the provision of health services in Nebraska. 6. Consumer Protection Bureau - enforces state and federal laws that safeguard against deceptive, fraudulent, and unfair business practices. 7. Transportation Bureau - represents the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) in its litigation, and managing law related to the State Highway System. 8. Medicaid Fraud and Patient Abuse Unit - responsible for investigating and prosecuting Medicaid fraud and violations of state laws relating to the provision of Medicaid services. 9. Agriculture, Environment, and Natural Resources Bureau - supervises the litigation support and enforcement of rules concerning agriculture and the environment as well as protecting the State's interests in the waters of interstate rivers with respect to interstate water allocations set by Compact or U.S. Supreme Court Decree.

Requirements for the position

Must be a registered voter. Must have been admitted to the practice of law in this state for at least two (2) years.
