Job Description
How office affects the voter
Of approximately a $4 Billion State Budget, the Board of Regents presides over expenditures, state federal and private grants and private donations of approximately $2 Billion. Nebraska football is not included with the exception of insurance for student athletes.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Hire/fire the president and other leadership of the university. • Determine faculty tenure, compensation, insurance, retirement benefits (according to certain requirements) and benefits for all employees • Pay expenses for recruiting academic, administrative, professional, and managerial personnel. • Manage/Approve the quality of buildings/properties of the university. • Determine the amount of money for purchasing art and selling textbooks at a fair price. • Provide governance for postsecondary educational institutions designated by the Legislature to be a part of the University of Nebraska system, including the medical center. • Approve programs of instruction in the colleges which may be designed by the faculty and provide for holding classes without duplication throughout the university system. • Confer degrees

Many of the noted duties and responsibilities are being managed by others within the university system without Regents direct supervision. Current tenured employment framework allows for others to create and determine policies and practices. If someone running for the office wants to be more involved in the details, there would need to be some changes in policy for how things are managed. The position requires the ability to work collaboratively.
