The Village Board decides how property tax is spent in the Village.

Duties and Responsibilities

The size of a village may adjust what positions are needed, but law authorizes the Village Board to appoint a village clerk, treasurer, attorney, engineer, overseer of the streets, and chief of police and other such officers as necessary, They also appoint a 3-member Board of Health, which includes the village board chairperson and 2 others, one of whom should be a health-care provider. Except for police, all have one-year terms.

Requirements for the position

Must be a registered voter. Must be a citizen of the United States. Must be a resident of the village.

Other information

Villages range in population from 100 to 800. After 800 they may become a city, but may also choose to remain a village until the population reaches 5000 when they must become a city.
