Job Description

How office affects the voter

Omaha is governed by a Strong Mayor form of government which means the mayor is essentially the President/CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of the city. A Strong executive enables the business of city services to operate, be managed and to be held accountable directly on the election ballot.

Duties and Responsibilities

Each year the mayor is to present a proposed budget to the City Council. The mayor may from time to time recommend measures the City Council should consider. As CEO the mayor has authority for hiring and firing of city department heads as well as being responsible for enforcing the law. The mayor therefore has significant involvement in police activity.
