Our Explanation
For 3-miles outside Lincoln city limits, known as the extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction, residents have limitations on what they can do or not do on their property. Those zoning decisions are made by the Lincoln City Council, but currently those residents have no say in who makes those decisions.
Those residents are not paying property taxes in the city but are still subject to city-mandated development fees and possibly cellphone occupation tax. It could sound a little like taxation without representation.
The proposed amendment to the City Charter would allow residents in the extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction to vote in city elections.
Those opposed to the idea don’t think those residents should have any say in the elections if they are not supporting the city with paying property taxes.
Voting FOR the amendment would allow residents just outside the city limits to vote in city elections.
Voting AGAINST the amendment would keep things as they are.
